What’s Wiring Diagram

A wiring diagram is a form of schematic which uses abstract pictorial symbols to demonstrate every one of the interconnections of components in the system. Wiring diagrams are made up of certain things: symbols that represent the constituents in the circuit, and lines that represent the connections with shod and non-shod. Therefore, from wiring diagrams, you understand the relative location of the components and the way these are connected. It’s a language engineers need to learn whenever they work on electronics projects.

Wiring Diagram VS. Schematics

It’s simple to get confused about wiring diagrams and schematics. Wiring diagrams mainly shows the physical position of components and connections in the built circuit, however, not necessarily in logic order. It emphasizes on the layout in the wires. Schematics emphasize on how circuits work logically. It reduces integrated circuits into sub-components to generate the system’s functional logics much easier to understand . It’s most successful for learning the entire operation of your system.

How to Read Wiring Diagram

To read a wiring diagram, firstly you have to find out what fundamental elements are included in a wiring diagram, and which pictorial symbols are employed to represent them. The common elements in the wiring diagram are ground, power source, wire and connection, output devices, switches, resistors, logic gate, lights, etc. A list of electrical symbols and descriptions is found about the “electrical symbol” page.

Line Junction

A line represents a wire. Wires are utilized to connect the components together. All points across the wire are identical and connected. Wires on some places must cross the other, but that does not necessarily mean that they connect. A black dot is utilized to suggest the injunction of two lines. Main lines are represented by L1, L2, and so forth. Usually different colors are used to distinguish the wires. There should be a legend on the wiring diagram to share with you what each color means.

Types of Connection

Usually circuits with more than two components have two basic varieties of connections: series and parallel. A series circuit can be a circuit by which components are connected along just one path, therefore the current flows through one element of get to the next one. In a series circuit, voltages add up for all those components connected inside circuit, and currents are identical through all components. In a parallel circuit, each device is directly connected to the power source, so each device receives the same voltage. The current in a very parallel circuit flows along each parallel branch and re-combines once the branches meet again.

Tips to Draw Good-looking Wiring Diagrams

A good wiring diagram should be technically correct and clear you just read. Take care of every detail. For example, the diagram should show the proper direction in the negative and positive terminals of each component.

Use the best symbols. Learn the meanings with the basic circuit symbols and select the right ones to use. Some in the symbols have really close look. You must have the opportunity to share with the differences before applying them.

Draw connecting wires as straight lines. Use a dot to suggest line junction, or use line jumps to indicate cross lines which are not connected.
Label components such as resistors and capacitors with their values. Make sure the text placement looks clean.

In general it is good to set the positive (+) supply at the top, and also the negative (-) supply towards the bottom, and the logical flow from left to right.

Try to arrange the placement reducing wire crossings.
