Essential Tips for Safe Electrical Repairs

Repairing electrical wiring, more than every other household project is all about safety. Install an outlet properly and it is as safe as possible; set it up improperly and it’s really potentially deadly. That’s why there are so many rules surrounding electrical wiring and installations. The rules can be complicated, definitely, and quite often confusing, even for master electricians, but you’ll find basic concepts and practices that affect nearly all electrical wiring project, particularly the kind that DIYers are qualified to tackle.

Here’s a review of five of the most basic rules that will assist make you stay safe when creating electrical repairs.

1. Test for Power

The simplest way in order to avoid electrical shock is usually to ALWAYS test wires and devices for power before implementing them or near them. Simply shutting over power is detrimental enough.

Further, it isn’t really uncommon for circuit breaker boxes to be mislabeled, particularly if the electrical service continues to be extended or adapted over the years. The circuit breaker label may well not accurately describe what are the circuit breaker actually controls.

Always test for power before implementing any circuit wires.

2. Check Amperage Ratings

All electrical wiring and devices offer an amperage, or amp, rating. This is the maximum level of electrical current they are able to safely carry. 5. Box It, Clamp It

The National Electrical Code (NEC) mandates that all wiring connections be produced in the appropriate enclosure. In most cases, what this means is a box. Enclosures not only protect the connections—and protect people from accidental connection with those connections—they also provide method for securing conductors (like electrical cables) and devices.

The rule this is simple: avoid being lazy. If you need to produce a wiring splice, install a junction box and secure the cables for the box with cable clamps. Never leave a splice or another connection exposed or unsecured.
